From 9/11 Advocacy to Life-Saving Stem Cell Donations

September 20, 2024 | Michael Barasch

For Barasch & McGarry Attorney Destinee Salomon, the call arrived in 2019. She was a stem cell match for a stranger in a different state, who was given a less than 10% chance of surviving his illness.

The Gift of Life Marrow Registry is an organization that matches potential donors with patients in need. Destinee had signed up for the registry and, after being notified of her match, completed the donation process. Years later, the recipient of Destinee’s bone marrow donation leads a happy, healthy life watching his grand-children grow and building model trains. The two even had an opportunity to meet at a Gift of Life event in South Florida.

As an attorney at our firm, Destinee works tirelessly to secure compensation for families who have lost loved ones to a 9/11-related illness. Destinee’s contributions now include saving lives.

In 2022, Patrick Rheaume, a Georgetown Law School graduate who works in the Barasch & McGarry community outreach department, was diagnosed with leukemia. Thanks to the Bone Marrow Registry, he received lifesaving bone marrow. Thankfully, he was able to return to a normal life. We urge our clients and everyone to consider joining the Gift of Life Marrow Registry at giftoflife.org. The life you save may be someone in the 9/11 community.
