FDNY Adds Names of 5 EMS Workers and 16 Firefighters to WTC Memorial
The Journal of Emergency Medical Services has reported that on Tuesday, September 8, FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro added the names of 21 members who died of 9/11-related illnesses during the past year to the World Trade Center Memorial Wall at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn. Five of the individuals honored were EMS workers:
- EMS Lieutenant Douglas Mulholland
- EMT Luis de Peña
- EMS Lieutenant Michael F. Cavanagh
- EMS Captain William C. Olsen
- EMS Lieutenant Thomas Giammarino
Firefighters whose names were added to the memorial this year are:
- Firefighter Joseph T. Callahan
- Battalion Chief Richard E. McGuire
- Deputy Chief Inspector James W. Mandelkow
- Lieutenant John J. Halpin
- Lieutenant Keith M. Loughlin
- Lieutenant John K. Gremse
- Lieutenant Howard J. Bischoff
- Firefighter Daniel E. Heglund
- Firefighter Robert E. Leaver
- Firefighter Cornell L. Horne
- Firefighter Eugene J. McCarey
- Firefighter James J. Marshall
- Firefighter Charles S. Szoke
- Battalion Chief John J. Cassidy
- Captain John R. Graziano
- Firefighter Gregory A. Chevalley
The wall now contains the names of 110 FDNY members who have succumbed to illnesses directly attributable to rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Commissioner Nigro conceded that this is a “difficult and painful tradition, but one that is undeniably necessary.” The commissioner stated that currently “more than 10,000 members of the FDNY . . . are battling [9/11-related] illnesses.”
