Critical Deadline Approaches for 9/11 First Responders with Prostate Cancer
Many of the heroic first responders who came to the aid of other Americans after the 9/11 attacks later experienced serious illness. Sixty-two different cancers have been linked to exposure to the toxic rubble and dust of the World Trade Center.
Luckily, many of these heroes and their families have fought hard to ensure that those who are diagnosed with diseases related to their service to the country are compensated. Laws such as the Zadroga Health and Compensation Act, named after NYPD Detective James Zadroga, provide funding for screening and medical care of those who were exposed to toxins in service to their country.
Unfortunately, there are deadlines attached to claims under the laws that help police, firemen and EMS workers. One crucial deadline is quickly approaching. According to the Detectives’ Endowment Association (DEA), those who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer between September 11, 2005 and September 11, 2013 only have until October 14, 2015 to register their claim with the Victim Compensation Fund.
The DEA represents current and former detectives of the NYPD and is encouraging people to spread this message so that no 9/11 first responder is left without treatment.
In addition to the specific deadline for those diagnosed during that time period, any first responders diagnosed after September 11, 2013 must register within two years of their diagnosis.
