New WTC Health Program Research Recommendations

The Science and Technology Advisory Committee (STAC) plays an important role in driving research and recommendations for the WTC Health Program (WTCHP). The group recently prioritized research aims for this year. 

Established by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, the advisory committee is made up of those with a helpful and unique perspective of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Members include physicians, researchers, responders and other specialists as required by the Act. 

In February of this year, STAC made recommendations to the WTC Research Program that include the following: 

• Research the possibility of new conditions or diseases among WTC survivors that are not currently recognized by the WTC Health Program.
• Review the importance of biomarkers to identify early stages of disease among WTC survivors.
• Research the effect of the disaster on pregnancy and early childhood into adolescence.
• Improve the ability to use WTCHP data to monitor health conditions among WTC survivors more actively.
• Develop information about symptoms of psychiatric disorders and methods to treat survivors suffering disaster-related mental health problems.
• Evaluate the use of WTCHP services and the value of medical monitoring to affected individuals.
• Evaluate the efficiency of specific treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among those affected by the WTC disaster. 

STAC reviews current research in order to make recommendations to the WTCHP administrator. Using input from STAC, along with other information, the administrator makes decisions about health conditions covered by the WTCHP and related issues.
