Major 9/11 Negligence Lawsuits

The events of 9/11 resulted in a flurry of legal activity by victims and their families. In addition to the lawsuits against the organizations and financiers connected to the attacks, there have also been numerous personal injury lawsuits based on the premise that the negligence of certain parties either allowed the attacks to occur or exacerbated their effects. Some of these lawsuits are still pending, more than 12 years later.

Numerous lawsuits have been filed by victims and their families as well as the owners of the Word Trade Center complex. The defendants include:

• The airlines involved
• The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
• Airport security companies
• Property management companies
• Contractors

These claims have been consolidated in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein is presiding over pretrial matters in the consolidated case, In re September 11 Litigation. This case encompasses claims for personal injury, wrongful death, property damage and business loss. This case is distinct from a separate multidistrict case, also in the Southern District of New York, against the parties who allegedly perpetrated and financed the attacks.

Participation in this or other similar litigation may disqualify you from receiving benefits from the September 11^th Victim Compensation Fund. This is not always the case, however, and plaintiffs who settled or were otherwise released from litigation before the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 was enacted may still qualify for VCF benefits.
