Transit Workers with 9/11-Related Illnesses Now Eligible for Sick Pay
Thousands of Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) workers were deployed to Lower Manhattan in the months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, working tirelessly in search-and-rescue, cleanup, and recovery efforts.
As a result of their exposure to Ground Zero toxins, many of these MTA workers have since been diagnosed with cancer or respiratory disease.
Thankfully, the MTA board recently voted to guarantee sick pay for any transit worker who was exposed to Ground Zero toxins and now suffers from a 9/11-related health condition, including 68 different types of cancer and many respiratory diseases.
The policy fulfills the promise of a law enacted in 2017 providing sick pay for all New York State employees sick from Ground Zero toxic exposure.
Previously, MTA workers used accrued sick time or went without pay while accessing medical treatment.
If you were in Lower Manhattan on 9/11 or in the months that followed, you are likely eligible to register with the World Trade Center Health Program and the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund providing free health care and significant compensation should you ever become sick in the future.

Trying to determine if my father was one of these MTA workers. He died in 2011 of hemorrhagic pneumonia.
