    The Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) will Permanently Close Exactly 3 Years from Today

    Today marks three years from the date that the Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) will shut its doors forever. While the WTC Health Program (WTCHP) was extended for 75 years, the 9/11 Community will no longer be able to assert claims for compensation for new illnesses or wrongful death after December 18, 2020. Despite the fact that the VCF has awarded over $3 billion to 14,000+ responders, downtown residents, office workers, teachers and students, the reality is that only a fraction of those eligible have registered with the WTCHP and moved forward with a VCF claim.

    At least 12 former students who attended schools south of Canal Street on 9/11, or during the eight months that followed, have filed claims with the federal government for World Trade Center-related cancers. Dozens of others have been diagnosed with well-recognized 9/11 respiratory illnesses. Scores of teachers have fallen ill, and, tragically, many have died from their WTC illnesses.

    WTC Health Program Declines to Add Parkinson’s Disease to List of 9/11-Related Conditions

    The two petitions from 9/11 survivors met the threshold test in that they “suggested a potential association between exposure to known 9/11 agents and Parkinson’s disease and parkinsonism, including manganese-induced parkinsonism,” but ultimately were rejected for insufficient evidence of causation.
